Onsite & offsite SEO – building a better business

Search engine optimisation is all about positioning your website in the best possible light in order to attract new business. We tend to categorise this as ‘onsite’ and ‘offsite’ optimisation. Onsite optimisation is everything we can do on the physical pages of your website to best position yourself for Google and the other search engines and this includes a big list of items we go through with our clients and it includes your page content, images, text, metatags etc. Offsite optimisation typically relies on exterior forces that refer back to your website. Again we have a huge list of strateiges that include online advertising, PR, social media, article and blog writing as well as backlinks.

One thing people get really hung up about is ‘pleasing’ the search engines. Your target audience isn’t interested in the search engines and they are not likely to pick up the phone, email you or buy online if they don’t have a sense that you are the right company for them. So, the first rule is to always provide as much information about your products and services in the most engaging way possible. In other words, build your site for your visitors. We currently have a 30 point checklist but our focus will be not only on the optimisation but on getting more people to engage with you.

Here are a few tips:

  • Instead of grouping like topics on one page, ensure you have a separate page for each topic or sub topic. Tightly themed pages work the best. Remember, search engines index pages, not websites
  • For each page, use a keyword rich headline and use multiple sub headlines, referred to as H1, H2 and H3 tags. Each lower sub heading should develop your theme
  • Ensure the meta tags title reflects the main headline on your page
  • Keep the body text of each page above 400 words. Google needs enough information to index your so help them out
  • Use keyword hyperlinks throughout your website
  • Install Google analytics so you know exactly where your traffic is coming from and what pages are the most popular

Think of your website as an island. If you don’t have an infrasture that supports traffic coming to your island then you are not going to get any visibility and credibility. You need to have connections to the outside world. The more connections you have the higher the rankings. Focus on getting quality links back to your site and you also need to provide informative and creative articles and blog posts to attract people back to your site. Offsite optimisation is about you speaking to the world about your products and services and getting them to come back to your website.

Here are a few tips:

  • Ensure you sign up to local and national online directories
  • Submit your website to search engines, search directories and specialist directories
  • Obtain high quality related industry links that link back to your website
  • Try an online press release to get a bump in traffic
  • Submit quality content to article directories that drive people back to your site with a compelling offer
  • Use multiple segments of video content and distribute it to relevant sites
